Best Parenting Tips for Single Moms
Make time for yourself
• Another way I make time for myself is sitting down with them and while they play, I will read a book. (I love reading, it’s something that is relaxing to me, but you could do most relaxing activities while hanging with the kids). This way I am still present, but I let them know that this is time for them to play alone.
• First let’s drop the guilt and accept this isn’t a desire but a need. I have heard every excuse in the single parenting book for why time for yourself isn’t a priority. Some will say you chose to be a single parent, so you chose the burdens that come with it. That would include the lack of time to yourself.
• Some will say that real parents and strong men or women don’t need time alone, they can simply make it work. These are lies that are fed to us to make us feel inferior and incapable of being a good parent. Stop believing the lies and start realizing that every person, parent or not, needs to find time for themselves. Whether it is a weekend getaway, an hour a week alone or an evening curled up reading a book, it is human nature for every individual to need time alone to relax, detox and regroup.
Stay positive
No matter where you are on this journey, know that the work you're doing matters, and with each passing year, you'll gain another measure of confidence and strength. Before long, you'll see what others have been seeing in you for quite a while now: you rock!
This is one of the most important things you can do as a single parent. Your situation may not be perfect, but you are enough. Look back over the previous months and years (or days and weeks, if you're a newly single parent). Give yourself 'props' for all you've accomplished and successfully endured thus far.
Be consistent
Try to be consistent Children behave better when they have consistent rules. Stick to your rules as much as possible and remind yourself to be calm, even if your child pushes back. If you’re not always consistent – that’s OK. Just work on not giving in next time.
Children thrive on consistency and predictability for a lot of their care. But keeping that consistency in place when you are the sole caregiver can be overwhelming. As much as possible, set and follow some basic routines that can keep things calm for you and your child.
